This is a basic capacity check only — it compares the applied load to a padeye rating you already have from a certified design. It does not calculate pin, plate, or weld capacity. Any side-load angle greater than a few degrees is a genuine structural condition that a padeye must be specifically engineered to take — it is not something a rule-of-thumb formula can safely de-rate.

Hooks are rated for in-line pulling through the hook's own plane. Loading at an angle ("point loading" or "back loading") reduces capacity — the exact amount depends on the hook's own design, so treat the angle result here as a warning flag, not a precise de-rated figure. Check the manufacturer's chart for the specific hook.
If side loading can't be avoided, don't just accept it — instead consider:
A swivel hook, if rotation is what's causing the side load
A shackle, to align the load correctly instead of a hook
A master link or spreader beam, to improve the sling angles
A side-loading hook specifically designed and certified for that purpose
