The 1-10-1 principle
A widely taught rule of thumb for sudden cold water immersion (roughly 5°C/41°F and below):
1 minute — get breathing under control through the initial cold shock response; the urge to gasp and hyperventilate is the biggest immediate drowning risk
10 minutes — of meaningful muscle function to self-rescue: grab a lifering, climb onto something, or signal for help, before cold incapacitates hands and limbs
1 hour — before hypothermia is likely to cause unconsciousness (rough estimate, varies significantly by temperature and individual)
What extends survival time
An immersion/survival suit is the single biggest factor — can extend survival time several times over compared to ordinary clothing
A properly worn PFD keeps the airway clear without effort, preserving energy and the ability to survive cold shock
Minimizing movement (adopting a huddle or fetal position, not swimming unless a definite target is reachable) conserves core heat
Getting as much of the body out of the water as possible (even partially) meaningfully slows heat loss

Run regular MOB drills so response is automatic — recovery speed matters far more than any estimated survival time
Know your vessel's actual MOB recovery time and equipment before treating any estimate here as a planning margin
