Typical factors of safety

  • Wire rope slings — 5:1

  • Lifting appliances (cranes, hoists) — per manufacturer / standard

  • Ignoring sling angle reduction
  • Guessing load weight instead of confirming it

  • Assuming all slings have equal capacity

  • Rigging gear and any attached contents
