Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs)
SRLs engage almost immediately and need far less clearance than a shock-absorbing lanyard — often as little as 0.6–1.4m (2–4.5ft) total, depending on class and product

Anchor point position matters
Anchoring at or below the D-ring (e.g. a horizontal lifeline near foot level) is the worst case — free fall can be close to the full lanyard length
Anchoring overhead reduces free fall distance, sometimes substantially — but the exact reduction depends on the specific geometry and isn't modeled by a simple default here
Always anchor as high as practical to reduce both fall distance and swing (pendulum) risk
